This book was very useful, it helped me set up my outline, and I gathered a few facts from it to put into my thesis paragraph. From this book I learned that Ivan the Terrible didn’t exactly have a mental illness, but as a kid his parents fought and were violent, which resulted in him being disturbed. In addition, Ivan was not only bad, but also good; he won many battles.
I also gathered that Ivan was also given the name Gronzi which today translates to “awesome” but back then meant “terrible.” While skimming through the chapters I stumbled over some interesting facts, such as Ivan’s wife, Anastasia, had given birth to two kids, who were mentally handicapped. Finally, this book also talked about Ivan’s death; there was no treatment for the illness he had, and he finally died from it.
Haarman, Susan. "Absolute Terror: Ivan the Terrible." N.p., n.d. Web. 21 Nov. 2014.
This website was also very helpful. It went into depth on the battles he fought, and how he treated people. A famous war in which he tortured thousands was the war of Novgorod. In this battle he tortured innocent people by tying them to sleighs and running them into freezing water for them to drown. After reading this I noticed that Ivan Vasilyevich’s legacy is in the name people gave him, “Ivan the Terrible.”
In addition, I learned that Ivan had quick and severe mood changes and also that there was no cure. In addition, he caused his son’s death and his daughter-in-law, Elena, to miscarry. This article also talked about how Ivan, as the first Tsar of Russia, had complete control. Finally, this article helped me to understand, by the end of his rule, what land he had conquered; the Volga region and areas in east Volga in the Urals and Siberia.
"Best of Russia --- Royal Family --- Ivan the Terrible." Best of Russia --- Royal Family --- Ivan the Terrible. N.p., n.d. Web. 21 Nov. 2014.
This website helped me gather lots of important facts. Some of those facts included that when Ivan was just three both of his parents were gone and even though he had struggled greatly by age eight he was very intelligent. Also I learned that when Ivan was 8 to around 17 he was neglected and had to beg, even in his own palace. This article, as the others, also talked about how he killed his son and his mental instability.
One point that I really found interesting was that Ivan was devout in Russian Orthodox. In addition, he had set up a bodyguard, which was sworn to protect God’s Tsar. Also that he ruled from 1533- 1584. Finally, I found it very interesting that Ivan was re-christened as a monk, and was buried in his habit; hoping for eternal forgiveness.
"Ivan, IV, the Terrible." Gale World History in Context. N.p., n.d. Web. 23 Nov. 2014.
This site gave me very basic facts. Including his birth date (1530), when he was crowned Grand Prince (1533), and when he was crowned Tsar (1547). In addition, this site provided me with a timeline on Ivan’s life, focusing on wars. Such as in 1564 when the Russian army defeated Ula and when Russia divided into two states. As with other sites, this one also mentioned that Gronzi was a name given to Ivan, which meant terrible.
This article also talked about the famous story of Ivan the Terrible, ordering the building of the St. Basils Cathedral. Ivan had ordered this cathedral to be built and after it was built he realized it was very beautiful, so beautiful that he didn’t want it to be replicated. To make sure this didn’t happen he took the eyes out of the Architect. Ivan is famously known for this, and this action also demonstrates his craziness even more.

This book about Ivan the Terrible talked about all aspects of Ivan’s life. There were only a couple points that I took out of this though. The main point I got out of this book was when he was crowned Tsar. This book talked about how and when he was crowned.
This book about Ivan the Terrible also provided maps that helped me better understand where wars were and the location Ivan was wishing to gain by declaring wars on those lands. The main map that I used was a map of Ivan’s voyages and wars, on page 310.
Grey, Ian. Ivan the Terrible. Philadelphia and New York: J. B. Lippincott Company. Print.
During my research of the lands Ivan conquered, I stumbled on the problem of the where he conquered in relation to other lands. This book helped me visualize the areas Ivan conquered with a map. It also explained the areas he conquered and why.
Not only did this book provided me with facts about the lands he conquered, but also about his early life and it affected him through his whole life. I gave me useful facts that I included in my first and second paragraphs.
"HISTORY OF RUSSIA." HISTORY OF RUSSIA. N.p., n.d. Web. 07 Dec. 2014.
This website helped me write my three to last paragraph about the Livonia war and why it was such important land to have. From this website I learned that the Livonia war and the Lithuania war were linked, but not the same. It also talked about how these lands were desirable to have.
This website also talked about how the war lasted for 25 years and how the Russians lost. This lose was irritating and unbearable for the Russians. This was a critical war for them to win, to gain the Baltic Coast, and they lost. This article also helped me understand that Ivan was very ambitious.
Madariaga, Isabel. Ivan the Terrible. New Haven: Yale University Press, 2005. Print.
This book to provided a map of Russia and the lands Ivan conquered. This too helped better understand and more clearly write about Ivan and where he conquered. In addition this provided a solid understanding of Ivan’s childhood and early life. I used this a little in my second paragraph.
This book also showed artwork from the time when Ivan was in rule. A couple of these pieces were of the fire in Moscow, the execution of boyars, and Ivan and Anastasia’s wedding. This book also went into deep description of the Oprichnina. The book also talked about how the Oprichnina were a group of people who helped Ivan kill people.
"Wine Pot with Cover." Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. N.p., n.d. Web. 14 Dec. 2014
This website provided me with my primary source. My primary source was a wine pot that is being held at the MFA, but is not on display. This site also provided me with how the MFA obtained the wine pot with a portrait of Ivan the Terrible on it. In addition it provided a description of the pot, the dimensions, and what it was made out of.
This website taught me the wine pot was cracked and made out of tinned metal. In addition it taught me that the wine pot is twenty centimeters tall. Finally, this website gave a visual of the wine pot. It looks as if it is rusted over and if it was silver, even though it was tinned metal.

Tubechop.com was very useful because it enbaled me to cut down you tube video's so then they would fit the time limit. I choose to put a video in because it adds a different aspect. Instead of reading you are listening and watching, which sceintifically helps stick the idea better into somebodies brain.

This website helped our group gather information for our tab “Death”. In this website it states two opinions of people and what they think of him. On person said that he “foamed at the mouth like a horse.” To me this meant that he was crazy. This helped me better understand what he looked like and acted like and smelled like.
